Tensions Escalate in Liberia as Opposition Cries Foul over Alleged Threats to Former President

FreedomNews

The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in Liberia has raised the alarm over alleged threats to the life of former President George Weah. The CDC Secretary General, Jefferson Koijee, addressed a news conference in Monrovia, claiming that the significant presence of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) during Weah’s recent return to the Roberts International Airport (RIA) was an attempt by the government to assassinate the former president.

Koijee warned that if the government does not desist from “attacking and denying the former President access to Public facilities,” the CDC will stand up for its Political Leader. This alarming statement has prompted a response from the House of Representatives, which has summoned authorities from the Ministry of National Defense, the AFL, and the National Security Advisor to answer inquiries regarding the AFL’s presence during Weah’s arrival.

Meanwhile, Koijee has strongly refuted the allegation made by Liberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek Piah, that CDC supporters threatened to set the Roberts International Airport on fire, leading to the AFL’s intervention. Koijee described the minister’s claim as a “malicious lie and misleading allegation,” stating that it was nothing more than “public verbal ejaculation.”

As the political tension in Liberia continues to escalate, the situation remains a cause for concern, with the opposition CDC accusing the government of targeting former President Weah. The government’s response and the outcome of the House of Representatives inquiry will be crucial in determining the way forward and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
