In the face of political division and oppression, our leaders must understand that true progress and unity cannot be achieved through the marginalization of those who hold differing views. The essence of democracy lies in the ability to positively impact the lives of the people, not in the suppression of opposition.
During elections, the electorate makes decisions based on the tangible improvements in their lives, not on the propaganda used to discredit opponents. Instead of wasting time on divisive tactics, leaders should focus on uniting the nation to attract much-needed investment.
Investors are wary of countries where the president publicly supports groups deemed illegal by the courts. They are equally hesitant to invest in nations where citizens are met with violence when they exercise their right to peaceful assembly. Such actions only hinder the progress of the administration.
Former President Sirleaf demonstrated a different approach by engaging with political opponents without resorting to hostility. She recognized that some critics were simply individuals in need of support and used her resources to bring them on board. Similarly, President Weah showed compassion by assisting an opposition leader in a time of need. He appointed them without dismissing their concerns against him.
President Boakai must do the same because he is the president of all Liberians. His words and actions carry significant weight. He must understand that his endorsement of the majority bloc which the court termed actions as illegal and his usage of force against dissenting lawmakers was a misstep that has created an unnecessary scene for the nation as a whole and as such, he must correct that. As President, it is his responsibility to maintain calm and refrain from actions that could be perceived as supporting unlawful behavior. His administration must avoid siding with those who believe they are above the law.
Liberians have endured enough suffering and deserve unity, not division. They need progress, not chaos. President Boakai must be a leader who understands and respects the disagreements of all citizens, not just a select few. He was elected to guide Liberians toward success, not to prove a point against his opponents.
It is time for our nation to come together and strive for a better future for all. Liberia and its people deserve better, now and forever.
